I recently rediscovered an old high school publication that a friend’s mom kept all these years. My English teacher knew I loved writing and encouraged me to submit work for our annual poetry publication. Six of my poems were selected for inclusion. I wrote a lot of juvenile poetry back then, and never thought twice about publishing it for all the world to read. Now my writings are fraught with insecurities, self-doubt and overthinking. One of my goals for the new year is to get back to writing from the heart, without a filter, and with all the confidence of a teenager with big ideas about the world and all the answers for its ills. Enjoy this vintage Kenesha, circa 1996. Welcome back, kiddo.
